Features

  • The 304 stainless steel vacuum insulated tank keeps your beverages piping hot or ice-cold, whether you’re camping in the backcountry or hosting indoors. The lid seals gasket water-tight to prevent any leakage.

    304 stainless steel has a high chromium content to resist corrosion even in the toughest conditions.

  • Use the outer magnetic surfaces to easily attach, organize, and change your setup to hold tools, utensils, and gear. Add your custom magnets from National Parks, loved ones, and more.

    Outer surfaces are made by electroplating Polyoxymethylene (POM) plastic with iron and then finished with powder coating. The iron ensures strong magnetic properties for customizable accessories, such as hooks and shelves.

  • The faucet locks into place to ensure consistent alignment every time. When the faucet is screwed into the tank, a check valve opens to allow the flow of liquid. When the faucet is unscrewed from the tank, the check valve snaps closed to stop flow. The locking faucet is easy to use and can be operated with only one hand.

    The housing is made of Acetal (polyoxymethylene or POM) plastic for it’s durability and excellent wear properties, the handle is made from sustainably sourced ash wood, the magnets are neodymium, and the rubber gaskets are made out of EPDM rubber.

  • The BaseTank offers a wide opening, unlike other jugs on the market. The wide opening provides easy access to clean the entire stainless steel tank.

    When ready to dry the BaseTank, simply flip the BaseTank over and allow to dry. The BaseTank design allows ample airflow for drying.

  • The top of BaseTank is an easy-to-clean drying rack for glasses, kitchenware, and more. The drying rack also doubles as extra storage to easily grab gear at your fingertips.

    The Deck is made out of sustainably sourced bamboo for it’s antibacterial properties and aesthetic appearance.

  • The back of BaseTank acts as a garage for storing accessories, magnets, and gear to keep organized.

Locking Faucet

The faucet interlocks with the tank to ensure an aligned secure connection every time.

The black housing is made of Acetal (polyoxymethylene or POM) plastic for it’s durability and excellent wear properties, the handle is made from sustainably sourced ash wood, the magnets are neodymium, and the rubber gaskets are made out of EPDM rubber.

The butterfly valve is the best valve for longevity, simplicity, and metering flow.

A fully-open faucet can fill a 3 liter Camelback® in 6 seconds.

Once the faucet is screwed in, the check valve opens, allowing flow. Simply unscrew the faucet and the check valve snaps shut to cut off flow.

Cleaning

The Design Process

improvements From Other Designs

    • The faucet leaks and is low quality.

    • Hard to operate one-handed.

    • Flow rate is slow.

    • Spout doesn’t align with gravity every time.

    • Not aesthetically pleasing.

    • No storage for soap, a sponge, or towel.

    • All plastic.

    • Hard to clean with sponge.

    • Can’t see inside container.

    • Drying the container is difficult since it can’t balance upside down.

Constraints

Schedule: 23 days

Pressure: Must withstand pressures from carbonated liquids or elevation changes.

Temperature: Handle a wide range of temperatures for both ambient air and liquid temperatures. Must withstand freezing conditions for winter camping as well as intense heat during the peak summer months, especially in the desert.

Materials: Handle abuse, built tough, solid frame.

I took inspiration from:

I couldn’t find anything like this on the market today.

Preliminary Design and Sketching

Ultimately, I settled on a rugged two-panel design that housed the tank in between them.

Calculating the diameter needed in order to supply the desired flow rate.

SolidWorks “Prototyping”

How have I not learned Blender™ yet?

Sometimes it can be hard to visualize how things will look solely through sketching and tangible prototyping. Harnessing other 3D software’s could be incredibly useful in the design process.

Creating and testing ideas in SolidWorks® is incredibly inefficient and I now see the potential with other rendering softwares that allow surface manipulation, such as Blender™.

Mock Assembly

Thoughts

Designing a product is both humbling and rewarding. I’ve learned there is an incredible amount of energy that goes into the design process of a product and it takes an ample amount of time. I’ve also learned that designing a product by myself is not ideal. Throughout the process, I was craving collaboration and brainstorming with a team. Bouncing ideas off of a team is essential for the design process.

If I had more time or a “part two” to fix some attributes, these are some aspects I’d like to change:

  • The internal check valve assembly protrudes into the tank too much.

  • Water from the drying rack would drip off the sides of the tank which might cause residue build up.

  • I ran out of time to add a pressure relief valve in the back upper part of the tank. I would like to see a screw valve that is robust and doesn’t leak.

  • Liquids would pool in the lower recessed handle slot due it’s concave design. Could add a drainage hole or change the shape.

  • The magnets would corrode over time on The Deck.

  • Design is too heavy. Would love to reduce weight and improve manufacturability.
